C. Caramanico & Sons celebrates 75th anniversary In Section: Sima // Meet A Member

C. Caramanico & Sons, based in Upland, PA, is celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2021. Snow Business caught up with company President John Caramanico Jr. to mark the occasion:

SB: How do you honor the company’s past in how the company operates in 2021 – a vastly different world than when the company started?

JC: The world has certainly changed! It feels as if it is changing faster than ever these days. We honor our past by following and expanding upon the culture that has always been part of both our family and the company. Treat everyone the way you wanted to be treated, honor your commitments, and never burn bridges. Those values have been handed down from generation to generation.

SB: Did you grow up working in the company? What lessons did you learn from those who came before you?

JC: Both Bill and I grew up in the business. In the 1980s, while growing up, the main office was in our basement. We did our homework at my dad’s desk. Trucks and equipment were always parked on our backyard. Of course, our summer jobs were working for my dad (John Sr.) and Uncle Mike. I saw firsthand how hard our dad and uncle worked to be successful. You have to wake up every day and earn the respect and trust of both your team and your clients.

SB: Do you love snow? Or is the service a “necessary evil” that you must provide?

JC: That is a complicated answer. When I first started working, I loved snow! Early mornings, big equipment, an immediate sense of accomplishment. I could not get enough. Now?

We plan for snow all year long! I get anxious and excited as the first storm of the season approaches. It is exciting to see all the planning get deployed into action. We mobilize close to 300 people, depending on the size of the storm. But as the owner, I worry a lot about team safety and client satisfaction. I am really proud of our people who do such an incredible job delivering for our customers. Going into battle with whatever Mother Nature throws our way with our hardworking, smart, dedicated and loyal team is amazing!

SB: Are you doing anything special to celebrate 75 years in business?

JC: We are hosting a party at a local arboretum in September to celebrate the milestone. We have invited all team members, clients, vendors and friends. We are creating a “timeline” for the business that will be unveiled at the party. We also have put up billboards on local highways to thank our past and present employees, customers and vendors for their part in making us successful for 75 years.
